Incredible Reference Work!
Of all the Naval Technology Reference works I've seen, and I've seen quite a few, this is by far the most comprehensive, detailed, and analytical of them all. Mr Baker has done a superb job in the amount, depth, and accuracy of his research, and has given the world an all-in-one reference work for the Naval Warfare genre. Whether you're looking for specifics on weapon systems, sensors, crew compliment, etc., there's no doubt that your questions will be thouroughly answered in his all-in-one, do-everything Naval Reference Work. I highly recommend it!

Noahs Ark - An Excellent Childrens Book
Noahs Ark is an excellent childrens book. Precious Moments tells a great story with the Old Testament and Noah building an ark and giving shelter to families and animals during a big flood. The illustrations makes the story so real and gives children a better understanding of how great a person Noah and his Ark were. My nieces enjoy this book very much and read it all the time. I find they also ask many questions which I can refer to this book and illustrations to help them. Precious Moments makes helping children more fun and easy. A really great book for any child!

Old Masters Repainted: A Detailed Investigation Into the Authenticity of Paintings Attributed to Wu Zhen (1280-1354)
Published in Paperback by Hong Kong University Press (June, 1995)
Author: Joan Stanley-Baker
Average review score:

Chinese Paintings Explained
A highly readable but scholarly book. Should not be a reader's first book about Chinese art, but is very useful for, say, college art history at any level.

In what I found to be the most useful chapter, "Significant Criteria for Period Style," Stanley-Baker manages to isolate exactly what attributes belong to Song, Yuan, and Ming paintings. Her observant writings that link the physical with the spiritual (e.g. breathing space in relation to mountains in landscape paintings) are wonderful in their simplicity. Her essays will certainly enrich the connoiseur's love of Chinese art.

I see this book as indispensable to the student of Chinese art and highly recommended to the amateur of same.

Our Old House

Authors: Susan Vizurraga and Leslie Baker
Average review score:

Our Old House by Susan Vizurraga
If you've ever walked through an old house and wondered who lived there before you, this book is for you. From its beginning with a wisteria vine curling around a post on the front porch to the end, this is a gorgeous and well-written book that will appeal to young readers and their parents and grandparents. Vizurraga demonstrates a true gift for the written language as she tells the story of an old house with a new family and a visitor from the past. Baker's lush watercolor illustrations are the perfect compliment for this story that grew from the Commerce, Georgia author's own experiences living in and renovating a Queen Anne cottage built around 1908. I love this book and include it among my all-time favorites. I recommend it to all readers who love well-written children's books and old houses.

Out On A Limb (American Autobiography)
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1946)
Author: Louise Baker
Average review score:

Useful, Serious, Amusing Self-Story
At the age of eight, Louise Baker lost her right leg in a bicycle-meets-car accident. Out on a Limb is her story of her subsequent life as a uniped. Throughout the book she maintains a fine balance, never denying the difficulties of her handicap, never inviting pity for her plight, as she recounts adventures she might never have had with two legs.

The book is filled with potentially useful information about living with a handicap: for instance, to prevent nerve damage that can incapacitate the arms, the proper way to walk on crutches is to bear your weight with your hands, not on the armpit saddles,. Also, the skilled crutch user keeps the crutches straight and close to the body, not flung wide, where they may trip a by-passer. (Baker does point out that if you want to trip someone, you can fling the crutches wide and trip, and the victim of this minor perfect crime will be apologizing for his clumsiness before he is back on his feet!)

As balanced as the narrative perspective is the prose: even, deceptively simple, every word right. Baker's light sense of humor plays well against the serious elements of her story. Mournful self-pity is certainly not her style, but she can show her handicap to be a terrible nuisance. Example: She went horseback riding with a man who wanted to propose to her. Unaware of his intentions but acutely aware of how unglamorous she was on the remount, she refused his invitation to dismount and talk for a while. At that interesting moment her horse took off back to the stable, and he was forced to ask her to marry him at the top of his lungs as his horse galloped behind. (She accepted.)

This little episode, lightly told, is typical of the method of the book, where potentially serious situations work out well in the end, even though everything would have been easier (but possibly less fun) with two legs

I love this little book, and I wish it were back in print at a price I could afford..

The Outdoor Living Room

Authors: Martha Baker, Chuck Baker, and Sara Evans

Beautiful book
Loved this book. Beautiful photos-my only criticism is that I found many photos were repeated through the book in different chapters. I liked the index at the back of the book which listed sources for finding objects featured in photos. I also have Martha Baker's book, Garden Ornaments, and recommend both. These books have a permanent place on my bookshelf and bedside table.
